In 1985, then president of Rotary International, Mexican Dr Carlos Canseco, launched a plan to achieve polio eradication. To this end, the year 2005 was to coincide with the centenary of the founding of Rotary International. They have worked hard all over the world, in every Rotary Club of the world, their members have participated in awareness and vaccination campaigns.
During the said year 2005 and seeing that the result was not what was expected, Far from giving up, efforts have been redoubled with the “Polio Plus” campaign and the more than 1,200,000 Rotarians around the world continue to work.
The leadership of Rotary, all volunteers, have accomplished many tasks, fighting against political regimes, cultures and ideas, succeeding last year in seeing the WHO declaration for a polio-free Nigeria as a result.
Many times we read different opinion pieces where unfortunately the task of Rotarians falls into oblivion and total ignorance, since our task has been carried out and carried out without fanfare and propaganda, seeking the ultimate goal, which is here. eradication of this disease, and we are undoubtedly achieving it.
Today, two countries have only recorded one case each in 2021, Pakistan and Afghanistan. We continue to work to eradicate it from these territories, with ethnic, religious and political problems, but we continue to work.
It is also a source of pride for Argentinian Rotarians and for all our compatriots that for many years the coordinator of the aforementioned Campaign has been led with very good results by the former District Governor Dr. Héctor Mario Denner and that ‘he left his post under the responsibility of another Argentinian Rotarian, Dr Ramón Martin Amoros.
Rotary International is the largest non-governmental organization that arrived in our country in 1919 with the founding of the Rotary Club Buenos Aires. Today it is distributed in our country through six Districts, two of which are binational, sharing with Paraguay and part of Uruguay.
Rotary International is made up of men and women in society, our motto is “Give yourself before you think of yourself” and “Who serves better, gets more.”
