The government of Russia announced this Wednesday that approved the world’s first coronavirus vaccine for animals. it’s about the Carnivac-Cov, which promises to have a 100% efficiency rate and will start mass production from April.
“The Carnivac-Cov clinical trials, which began in October last year, concluded that the vaccine is safe and very effective, as 100% of the animals tested developed antibodiesKonstantín Sávenkov, deputy director of the veterinary and phytosanitary agency Rosseljoznadzor, said in a statement.
Rosseljoznadzor clarified that the vaccine is only for carnivorous animals and that its “mass production” will begin in April. In turn, he indicated that the animals analyzed were cats, dogs, mink, red and arctic foxes.
The vaccine was developed by a subsidiary of Rosseljoznadzor, the Federal Center for Animal Health, which is in contact with fur companies in several European countries interested in purchasing it.
Meanwhile, military officials from the St. Petersburg region, located in northwest Russia, announced on Tuesday that animals participating in the military parade for WWII commemorations or who are deployed to the city airport should be vaccinated.
According to Rosseljoznadzor, the development of this vaccine was “particularly important” because several species of animals are sensitive to covid-19. In this sense, the agency pointed out that in Russia so far there have been two cases of infection in cats in Moscow and Tyumen, Siberia.
In November, Denmark decided to euthanize its entire mink population because the 15 million mink were suspected of carrying and transmitting a coronavirus mutation that could also infect humans.
