Russia can’t handle Delta variant of coronavirus, breaks new daily death record

Russia again broke its 24-hour covid-19 death record on Tuesday, amid a wave of the Delta variant and with a vaccination schedule that progressing very slowly.

In the past 24 hours, 852 people have died from covid-19, according to the daily report released by the government.

The previous record of 828 deaths was recorded last Friday.

The most affected country in Europe

Russia is, in absolute terms, the most affected country in Europe pandemic with 205,531 deaths, according to government figures.

Russian statistical agency Rosstat, which uses a broader definition of deaths caused by COVID, put more than 350,000 deaths linked to the pandemic at the end of July 2021.

Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said the numbers are “a serious cause for concern,” but nationwide restrictions are not currently under discussion.

Peskov noted that regional governments are allowed to introduce their own measures, and some regions do so in light of the increase in infections.
