PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKI, RUSSIA (Sputnik) – Russia will inform its international partners of its intention to withdraw from the International Space Station (ISS) project within four years, said Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov.

Moscow “will warn [a sus socios internacionales] of its withdrawal from the ISS from year 25, ”Borisov said in an interview with the Rossiya network 1.

He explained that Russia was planning to build its own orbital station because the ISS “is very obsolete”.

In this response, he continued, the government suggests advising foreign partners in advance.

The flight director of the Russian segment of the ISS, Vladimir Soloviev, predicts that many elements on board start to fail after 2025 and therefore presented a project of the Russian orbital station designed with an open architecture that will include at least five modules and have an unlimited lifespan.

The ISS project has 15 members, of which five are the main ones: Russia, the United States, Canada, Japan and the European Space Agency.

Construction of the station began in 1998, while the first permanent expedition was launched in 2000.

The useful life of the ISS, which was due to expire in 2015, has been extended twice: until 2020 and 2024.
