Russia sets new daily record for COVID-19 deaths amid public reluctance to get vaccinated

Russia has recorded 820 deaths from covid-19 in past 24 hours, a new daily maximum since the start of the pandemic, the country’s health authorities said on Thursday.

According to official data, during the last day they were detected 19,630 cases of covid-19, with which Russia is already accumulating more than 6.8 million and is ranked fourth in the world in number of infections after the United States, India and Brazil.

In the last month the epidemic situation in Russia has stabilized although in high numbers, about 800 deaths and 20,000 infections per day.

Moscow, the main source of infection in the country, has a significant reduction in deaths and infections, which have practically halved -54 and 1712, respectively- in the last 30 days.

In this same period have also decreased, although to a lesser extent, cases and deaths in the second largest city in the country, Saint PETERSBOURG which, in the past day, added 1,301 infections and 38 deaths from the coronavirus.

Since the start of the pandemic, according to official figures, Russia has deceased of covid-19 a total of 179,243 people.

Despite insistent calls from the authorities, the vaccination campaign against covid-19 is progressing slowly due to the reluctance of the population to vaccinate.

According to the portal Gogov.ru, only 35,547,057 people were vaccinated with the complete regimen, representing 24.3% of the population and 51.5% of the vaccination plan.

Over the past week, around 210,000 people have been vaccinated, so if this vaccination rate is sustained, it would take seven months from today to immunize 60% of Russia’s population.
