Arctic Sunrise ecologists protested against an oil rig in the Arctic and the Russians hijacked the ship in international waters and imprisoned the crew for months, releasing them just before the Olympics Winter 2014 in Sochi.

In 2017, the International Court of Arbitration in The Hague sentenced Moscow to pay the Netherlands 5.4 million euros in damages, but the Kremlin did not recognize the validity of the trouble.
