Guarantees of the Russian coronavirus vaccine two years of immunity, affirmed this Sunday the creators of Sputnik V. In addition, they assured that it presents the same efficiency for all age groups.

“The duration of the immunological effects of this vaccine they will be very long. We hope they are two years or more“said Alexander Gintsburg, director of the Instituto Gamaleya, the entity behind the development of the Russian product.

While he believed that the Sputnik light (which only requires a single dose) is in the final stages of evaluation, said those who receive this new version will have immunity of less duration.

He also referred to the doubts that had initially circulated about the effects of the vaccine in the elderly.

He explained that these unknowns arose because the immune system of the elderly “is not responding well.” However, he pointed out that the effectiveness is the same for all ages: “People over 60, 70 and 80 years old responds perfectly to this medication“.

Gintsburg said that Sputnik V is the best option on the market of vaccines against the coronavirus: “Among the 4-6 preparations in the world (…), from what we see, Sputnik V occupies, by its qualities, the first place“.

Sputnik V was the first vaccine to arrive in Argentina at the end of December. In principle, the national government announced the landing of 20 million doses in the first months of 2021. However, the Russian authorities blamed logistical problems and delays in delivery.

The director of the National Center for Research in Epidemiology and Microbiology Gamaleya – the full name of the Moscow institute – made the statements to Russian journalist Vladimir Soloviev, who interviewed him on his YouTube channel, according to the Russia Today site.

To date, the country has received 2,470,540 doses of this vaccine (1,660,540 correspond to the first component and 810,000 to the second).

Experts believe that the period between the first application and the second can be between 21 and 75 days.

In any case, a study by Conicet opens up the possibility that the second application may not be necessary in people who have suffered from Covid-19. In this regard, Gintsburg noted on Sunday that people who have already contracted the virus, but have few antibodies, they should be vaccinated in the same way than those who have never been infected.

“The special one exception are those cases where the patient is under chemotherapy and he’s taking drugs that stop cells from multiplying, ”he said.

In such cases, he said, “the vaccine does nothing wrong, but at the same time the effect is not achieved (desired) vaccination ”.
