Up to eight players could be involved in the investigation.

The Rutgers University Police Department investigates the potential fraudulent use of credit cards by eight Rutgers football players, reports Keith Sargeant of NJ.com.

NJ.com has not reported the names of the players allegedly investigated because no charges have been filed.

Earlier this week, the Scarlet Knights returned KJ defensive back. Gray and linebacker Brendan DeVera for violating the rules of the team, but no other details have been provided on the rules that they have broken. Gray told NJ.com that his lawyer had told him "to remain silent about the situation" when asked if his dismissal was related to the investigation. He also told NJ.com that he was "very optimistic" that he could transfer to another school.

Gray's lawyer, John Shiffman, did not return messages left by NJ.com and DeVera and his attorney could not be reached.

The Rutgers coach, Chris Ash, did not respond to NJ.com when he asked to comment
