After the cruel killing of journalist Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, the most powerful kingdom of the Arabian Peninsula is back in the middle of a scandal: 37 people were brutally executed for crimes related to terrorism.

Although these executions are not new in this country, one of the penalties provoked controversy. According to information provided by the Ministry of the Interior, the deaths were committed by decapitation and two of the bodies of the men executed were stuck publicly on a pole for several hours, something that does not happen often.

The government defends these executions with the argument that they are "a powerful deterrent"

In a statement, the ministry claimed that the executed persons had adopted extremist ideologies and they had formed terrorist cells in order to sow chaos and provoke sectarian conflict.

The executions took place a day after the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack on a Saudi security building in Zulfi City, where they killed four armed men and wounded three security guards.
