Several subway stations were flooded and major roads were closed in New York on Thursday, where the arrival of storm Elsa threatened new flooding on Friday.

Between 5 and 10 cm of water fell during a series of storms over New York and its region Thursday afternoon, the NWS Weather Service said, “causing flooding in places.”

Metro users posted videos of some flooded stations on Twitter. In one, people were seen in waist-deep water, trying to cross a dark pool to reach the platforms.

“Lines 1 and A recorded (..) a lot of flooding in the stations”, Sarah Feinberg, acting head of the MTA, New York’s public transport authority, acknowledged Thursday evening at a press conference.

Some roads, notably in the Bronx, have been temporarily closed, causing traffic problems after work.

The NWS has warned of possible new flooding until Friday morning, with heavy rains expected to arrive in the northeastern United States driven by Storm Elsa, which has already passed through the Caribbean and Florida.
