Hundreds of people attended the funeral of a Palestinian teenager killed by Israeli army yesterday during protest near Ramallah in the West Bank. The action has been condemned by the UN and the European Union.
Ali Ayman Nasr Abu Aliya, 13, was shot dead during a demonstration against the creation of an Israeli settlement in Mughayir, near Ramallah. He was taken in critical condition to a hospital in Ramallah, where he died. Palestinian News Agency Wafa reported that four other people were injured by gunfire from Israeli soldiers.
The Israeli army denied firing and he said he was only using “riot dispersal means” to prevent demonstrators from throwing stones at their troops.
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohamad Shtayé said it was “a new crime added to the long history of the Israeli occupation“. The choir announced that it will sue Israel at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for this fact, according to Wafa.
The UN envoy for the Middle East, Nickolay Mladenov, called on Israel to investigate the incident, which he called “unacceptable”. On Twitter, he said: “This incident has left us dismayed and must be the subject of a prompt and thorough investigation by the Israeli authorities to bring those responsible to justice.”
Ramallah is under curfew in the evenings and on weekends, as part of the measures put in place to contain the coronavirus pandemic. The West Bank has 2.8 million inhabitants and more than 70,000 infected with the coronavirus. The disease has claimed nearly 700 lives in the Palestinian territory that Israel has occupied since 1967.
