The lioness bit a 55-year-old man who visited a vacation spot in Virginia, South Africa's free state, last weekend.
Pieter Nortje approached a fence to interact with two felines that were on the other side. After patting a man's mane, he tried to do the same with a young woman who bitten his forearm, RT published.
The wife of the victim recorded the scene and responded by shouting in panic. Seconds later, the animal released her husband.
Pieter was rushed to hospital with a deep wound and his condition is serious due to septic shock, local media reported.
For its part, a spokesman for Tikwe River Lodge said the resort offers guided tours for six years and that it has never experienced a similar incident. He also denied that the place is responsible for the accident because there are "warning signs everywhere".
