Jordan and Andre Anchondo they were in the Walmart store in El Paso when
a young white man came armed with an badault rifle and started firing at people.
They were with their two-month-old baby and their immediate reaction was to protect him. It cost them their lives.
But the boy survived the shooting that killed at least 22 people.
The baby was slightly injured (two-finger fracture), probably because of the weight of his mother's body when it fell on him.
The couple, who had three children, had just left her eldest daughter in training and had gone to the supermarket, like many other families, to buy school supplies for the new school year.
"They told me that my brother had tried to stop the attacker and hurt him," BBC News Gilberto "Tito" Anchondo, André's older brother, told BBC News.
"I am sad and upset about everything, but I will always remember my brother as someone who gave his life to save his wife and perhaps other people." He acted heroically.
Outside the hospital
The news of Jordan's death arrived on Saturday, while that of Andrew was confirmed Sunday.
Elizabeth Terry, the girl's aunt, told CNN that when the baby – Paul – was removed from under his body, the boy was stained with blood from his mother.
Now, the little boy goes home with a broken finger.
"How is it possible for parents to go shopping to go to school and die protecting their baby from bullets?"
André had left the family business – an auto repair shop – in 2018 and had started his own business, a company selling stone and granite for construction.
Jordan took care of his children.
"Tito" Anchondo launched a GoFundme campaign to raise funds for the victims' children.
Anchondo wonders how Skyler, one of the girls, will be able to live with what happened.
"The day of the shoot, it was his birthday and they were preparing a party, we are now waiting to take care of the children."
Deadly day
According to the local authorities, this was one of the deadliest days in the history of El Paso, a city of 680,000 inhabitants located in Ciudad Juarez, one of the cities most of Mexico.
According to the police, 21-year-old Patrick Crusius was the only attacker and did not resist the police when he was arrested.
Less than 24 hours after this incident, another mbadive shootout occurred.
The latter took place in the city of Dayton, Ohio, and killed nine and the gunman, who was shot dead by the police.
