The student at Rigby High School near Idaho Falls – whose name has not been released – is in sixth grade, so she would be 11 or 12 years old..
The young girl “took a pistol out of her backpack, shot several times in and out of the school”, Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said.
The sheriff said the injuries sustained by two students and a school staff member were not life threatening.
“During the shooting, a teacher disarmed the student and detained her until the police took her into custody,” Anderson added at a press conference.
The student was detained, while the incident is being investigated by the FBI and locally.
The injured students were transferred to a hospital, where they spent the night, while the adult has already been released from the hospital. The rest of the students were evacuated from the school after the event.
Authorities have not yet given any reason why the student carried out the shooting, although County Prosecutor Mark Taylor has indicated that once the investigation is completed, “he will bring the appropriate charges, possibly including three counts of attempted murder.”
The school district has decided to close all schools for this Friday due to the shooting.
