The Spanish deputy for Más País, Íñigo Errejón, delivered a strong speech on Tuesday in favor of the ley trans which is currently being debated in his country, amid strong political tensions after the PSOE’s abstention prevented the initiative from being processed.

“What bothers you is that there are trans people, it’s not the law. It is not that they have a plan so that they cease to exist, what you want is that they live in silence, suffer from shame and have difficulties from day to day ”, stressed Errejón in his presentation.

In this sense, the MP criticized his colleagues in Congress for calling trans people “sick”: “When a deputy arrives here and calls many sick people, it turns out that later in their neighborhoods, in their work, in their schools, in their institutes, there are people who insult them, harass them and tell them that they are sick. “

“You have to be very careful with the words you say because later they turn into violence and suffering for thousands of Spaniards just because they are what they are. You don’t have to tell them what you are. they are, we are not talking about disabled people, ”he stressed.

And he added, “If you stand up here and say that trans kids are experiences, how do you think they will be treated in their classes afterwards? How do you think they will pass it on to their families more? late? Do you think it helps freedom and equality? or does it contribute to violence and hatred?

The Spanish MP stressed that trans people “know perfectly well what they are” and that today the law “obliges them to constantly demonstrate what they are” while this is not the case for the rest of the population. And concluded: “The only sick are those who hate and will lose this battle.”

The project under discussion is a proposal registered by ERC, Más País, Compromís, CUP, Junts per Catalunya and Nueva Canarias, after the refusal of the PSOE to approve the proposed project by the Ministry of Equality in charge of Irene Montero.

Montero herself was present in Congress and lamented the political tensions surrounding the project: “I want to start by apologizing to the trans people. First, because I am aware that this debate should have come to this House by the government and I did not succeed. “

And he added: “Second, I want to apologize because trans people have seen their rights questioned for too many months, their lives called into question, and this is a diverse, plural, rights-respecting society. trans people and the LGBTI community. “

“It is a company that is proud to have always been at the forefront of the recognition of the rights of the LGBTI collective. I want to forgive them and I want to tell them that it will continue to be so, and that their rights will be law in this Parliament. We will settle this debt even if it is not as soon as I would like it to be ”, he summarized.

The Trans law which is the subject of discussions in Spain establishes the gender self-determination, which allows the change of sex recorded with the simple “express declaration” of the person concerned, without the need for a medical report or hormonal treatment.

The bill provides for the possibility for people over 16 years of age to access this right, while minors between 12 and 16 years can do so “through their legal representatives or by themselves with their consent”.
