British Citizen Arrested in Germany Charged with Disclosing Confidential Information to Russian Secret Service in Exchange for Money, the federal prosecutor’s office reported on Wednesday.
The arrest, which took place on Tuesday, responds to the request of the investigating judge of the Supreme Court, who claims to have solid evidence that David S., a local employee of the UK Embassy in Berlin, had been working for Russian espionage since at least November 2020.
The home and place of work of the detainee, whose identity was not disclosed, were also searched by the security forces.
The prosecution ensures that “On at least one occasion” the arrested person forwarded documents obtained through his work to a “representative of a Russian secret service”. “The defendant received in return for his information cash in an amount for the moment unknown”explains the statement.
German and British authorities cooperated in the investigation.
The detainee is expected to go to court on Wednesday to make a statement.
it’s about the third person arrested by Germany in the last three months for working for foreign secret services. Twice for Russian espionage and once for Chinese espionage.
For its part, the London Metropolitan Police (Met), better known under the name of Scotland Yard, confirmed this Wednesday that the arrest is for alleged crimes related to intelligence activities.
“The man was arrested in the Berlin area on suspicion of committing crimes related to his involvement in intelligence activity”Scotland Yard said in a statement.
The main investigation is in the hands of German authorities, but Scotland Yard’s counterterrorism command remains in contact with colleagues in Germany as the investigation continues, the note added.
