Sri Lanka bombings: the death toll rises to 290 and the police arrested 24 suspects

The number of victims of the eight bombings perpetrated Sunday against churches and hotels in Sri Lanza has risen to 290., said a spokesman for the police on Monday Ruwan Gunasekera.

More than 500 people were injured in the explosions, added the source, in the worst episode of violence in the country since the end of the devastating civil war, a decade ago.

At least two of the eight attacks were perpetrated by suicide, according to the police and the corresponding sources.

As, Three policemen were killed when another suicide bomber blew himself up during a raid on a house looking for suspectsstressed the same sources.

This Monday, the police also reported the discovery of a homemade pump on a road to Colombo airport accessalthough the aircraft has been disabled by Air Force experts.

A police source told AFP that the bomb "house" was discovered Sunday on a route leading to the terminal, which remains open although under a heavy security regime after the attacks.

"It was a homemade bomb, with explosives placed in a pipe"said the source.
