A fisherman in the United States was swallowed by a whale and thrown into the water seconds later while diving for lobsters.
Michael Packard says he was diving when he found himself in the sea giant’s mouth between 30 and 40 seconds off Provincetown, Massachusetts.
The animal spat at Packard, whose knee was only apparently dislocated.
Despite calls from his wife to change jobs, he says he has no plans to end his 40-year diving career on Cape Cod, a peninsula at the eastern end of the state of Massachusetts.
Humpback whales can reach 15 meters long and they can weigh 36 tons.
According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, its world population is approximately 60,000 copies.
Packard, 56, told the local newspaper Cape Cod Hours that he and his teammate had taken a boat trip to Herring Cove beach on Friday morning, where conditions were excellent, with water visibility of about 20 feet.
After jumping into the water with his snorkel gear on, Packard told local WBZ-TV News that he felt “a big bang and everything went dark.”
“He’s trying to swallow me”
The fisherman believed he had been attacked by one of the great white sharks swimming in the area. “Then I felt the sides and felt that I had no teeth,” he said.
“And then I realized, ‘My God, I’m in a whale’s mouth and it’s trying to swallow me. That’s right, I’m going to die.’
Packard says he’s been thinking about his wife and two children, ages 12 and 15.
“Then all of a sudden he came back to the surface… and he started to shake his head.”
“I threw myself into the air and fell into the water. I was free and I was floating there. I couldn’t believe it… I’m here to say it.”
His teammate, who had desperately searched the water for bubbles from Packard’s oxygen breather, brought him back to the boat.
Provincetown firefighters confirmed to CBS News they responded to a call at 8:15 a.m. local time (12:15 p.m. GMT) to help an injured lobster fisherman on a beach in Provincetown.
By mistake
Humpback whales tend to feed by opening their mouths wide to swallow as much prey as possible, such as fish or krill.
Therefore, some marine scientists believe that what happened to Packard was, in all likelihood, purely accidental.
An expert told Cape Cod Hours which was practically unheard of for a whale to swallow a human.
