Former Brazilian President Michel Temer was arrested yesterday in San Pablo after a court issued a warrant for arrest. In this case, Temer is suspected of receiving bribes in 2014 in exchange for employment contracts at the Angra 3 nuclear power plant in Rio de Janeiro. The former president decided to appear voluntarily before the authorities after a judge gave him until five in the afternoon to surrender. If he did not appear, he threatened to be arrested by the security forces. The ultimatum was launched by Judge Caroline Figueiredo, head of the Seventh Criminal Chamber of Rio de Janeiro.

Temer's arrest warrant began Wednesday night when the Regional Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRF-2) decided by two votes to one that his return to prison was ordered. But this is not the first time that Temer will be arrested. He had already been arrested on March 21 by the order of trial judge Marcelo Bretas.

On the same night of Wednesday, Temer had badured that he would voluntarily appear before the authorities. "I will introduce myself, this is not a problem for me," he told reporters waiting outside his home in the city of San Pablo. Aimed at the public, Temer was surprised by the measure and said that, from a legal point of view, it was a totally false action. "I have always maintained that there was no evidence in these cases, for me it was a nasty surprise, but tomorrow I will introduce myself voluntarily," he added.

Temer, who chaired for more than a decade the party of the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB, former PMDB), said he would defend his rights "until the end". Meanwhile, supporters of the former president have already filed a new writ of habeas corpus against the prison order and expect to receive a response this week. At the same time, the former president filed a petition asking to be placed in a special prison in San Pablo instead of being transferred to Rio de Janeiro, in order to get closer to his social and family environment. TRF-2 accepted the order.

The exmandatario, 78 years old and who ruled between 2016 and 2018, spent four days behind bars after being arrested in San Pablo Street last March. However, at that time, he managed to leave because one of the judges had granted him habeas corpus. In this case, still pending, the prosecution accuses him of receiving bribes from various companies and to be the principal leader of a criminal organization that used to $ 500 million in public resources for 40 years. This process, one of nine confronted with the former president and one of the six in which he was already pursued, is related to the Lava Jato operation. The numerous lawsuits against Temer, paralyzed by Congress while he was at the head of the state, were reopened this year after the political leader lost his power. One of the nine investigations opened by the former president is accused of benefiting companies in the port sector in exchange for bribes. He is also suspected of over-billing and services not executed by the Argeplan company, committed by nearly 100 million reais to carry out work. For the Attorney General's office, Argeplan belongs to Temer.
