Ten minors who have been trapped underground in China for at least two weeks were found dead, state media confirmed on Monday. As work continues to find the last trapped miner, there is no news about it as of yet.

The workers had been trapped by a January 10 explosion in a gold mine in Qixia, in Shandong province (east). This episode blocked 22 miners several hundred meters deep.

Ten have died since, 11 were saved alive on Sunday and the search for the rest continues, the CCTV television station said.

According to the authorities, despite the “tireless efforts” of the rescuers, “unfortunately ten minors were found dead”, and their “bodies have been found,” Chen Fei, the mayor of Yantai – the city Qixia administers, told reporters. Rescue efforts continue to find the last trapped miner, of whom there is no news at this time.

The explosion blocked the ventilation duct and damaged the cable car that allowed the miners to come to the surface.

Rescuers managed to establish contact a week ago with a group of ten miners, trapped about 580 meters deep. Thanks to a metal cable introduced through a conduit pierced in the rock, rescuers were able to sending food, medicine and phones to this group of found minors.

On Sunday morning, the huge obstacles blocking the well fell to the bottom, making it easier for the miners to come back to the surface and the suspension of drilling operations.
