The Spanish Supreme Court heard Wednesday the arguments of the accusations of the second day of the trial against the Catalan separatist leaders, after the first day devoted to the defense tower.
The trial, chaired by Magistrate Manuel Marchena, brings together the 12 defendants, their defenses and the three charges (the prosecutor's office, lawyers and popular accusation that represents the right party Vox) continue the hearing.
In his initial plea, prosecutor Javier Zaragoza said that "no one is or has been persecuted for his ideas, but for his actions"and considered that the subject of this lawsuit "is not the movement for independence" but "the very serious facts" this took place in September and October 2017, when the Catalan regional government organized an illegal referendum and then proclaimed its independence.
The prosecutor's remarks come after defense lawyers raised yesterday that the lawsuit was "political" against the independence movement and that there was a violation of the fundamental rights of the accused.
Once the Office of the Prosecutor, the State Bar Association and the Vox People's Prosecution ruled on the previous issues raised by the defenses, the court will decide how to solve them: be it on the fly, if you wait for the sentence or if you stop the trial to badyze them.
If the hearing continues, the statements of the accused will begin and the former will be the former vice president of the Catalan regional government. Oriol Junqueras, the most remarkable position of those sitting on the bench.
Junqueras was the number two executive power of Carles Puigdemont. The referendum on the independence of Catalonia was held on October 1, 2017. It was declared illegal by the Constitutional Court. October 27 of the same year.
For him, the prosecutor's office accuses him of rebellion and misappropriation of public funds and demands a 25-year prison sentence, such as Vox, although the state legal profession accuses of sedition and embezzlement and reduces the demand for punishment to 12 years.
TUESDAY, the first day of a unprecedented trial In Spain, most defenses, including Junqueras, denounced what she saw as lack of legal guarantees and the political nature of the process, claiming that the independence movement is judged.
