The regime of Nicolás Maduro announced Monday a change in the command of the Bolivian National Guard (GNB), protagonist of the crackdown Saturday that had blocked the entrance of humanitarian aid.

Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López has moved Major-General Richard López Vargas without giving any explanation of his decision.

Instead, he appointed Brigadier General Alirio José Cruz as the new commander of the GNB.

The outgoing López Vargas has been designated as the author of the order to burn consignments of food and medicine. Cruz will also be responsible for the Bolívar zone command, where clashes took place with the Pemón Indians on the border with Brazil.
