A trace in history

On 2 April 1982, Argentine troops landed on the Malvinas Islands in order to recover the sovereignty that had been seized in 1833 by the British armed forces. A few days after the landing and capture of the islands by the Argentinean crew, then England's prime minister, Margaret Tatcher, sent a strong team of English soldiers to answer and move the Argentine militia.

The war conflict was inevitable. Although short, it lasted about two and a half months, and it had extremely tragic results: 649 Argentine victims and more than 500 suicides motivated by post-war sequelae and trauma.

The discordant political, social and economic scenario facing Argentina at the time was the main motivation for the military-civic dictatorship to decide, in a hasty manner and without major military strategies, to accomplish a patriotic and heroic act to improve its image of government. However, the failure and defeat of Argentine troops further deteriorated their image.

In general, the reality of the Falklands war is none other than that of a clear disadvantage of the Argentine militia against the English forces, better prepared and endowed with weapons of superior quality. Our soldiers, youths forced to join forces and other volunteers, were kept in precarious conditions during the months of war. Lack of food, weapons, communication, clear instructions and precise coordinates was commonplace for a mission of this magnitude.

In November 2000, through Law 25,370, on April 2, it was declared Veterans' and Deaths Day in the Falklands in honor of all fallen combatants, survivors of the Falklands War. and their families.

Currently, the dispute over these lands is diplomatic and is among the priorities of the presidential summits in which several Latin American and world countries adhere to the claim of sovereignty of Argentina on the Malvinas Islands.
