The defense of "El Chapo" Guzmán will demand a new trial for the American justice

Former head of the Sinaloa cartel Joaquín "Chapo" Guzmánconvicted of trafficking more than 130 tons of drugs to the United States after trial of more than three months in New York, plans to demand a new process, announced his lawyer Friday, Eduardo Balarezo.

"Guzman plans to file a motion for a new trial on the basis of revelations" of Vice News, wrote Balarezo in a letter to the judge who presided over the case, Brian Cogan, and to which AFP had subscribed.

Vice News interviewed one of the 18 anonymous juries of the process, who said that a handful of jurors had consulted the cover of the case in the press and social networks during the trial, thus violating the rules.

The person who contacted Vice News by his own means did not give his name or last name to the journalist, and did not specify whether it was a man or a woman, or he was one of 12 juries or six substitutes.

The Mexican drug dealer, who faces life imprisonment for his crimes, will also request a hearing "to determine the extent of the misconduct" of the 12 incumbents and six substitutes, said his lawyer.

Balarezo's letter asks Justice Cogan that the 14-day period for requesting a new trial after the verdict be extended to 30 days from February 26.

El Chapo Guzmán, 61, was convicted on February 12 of the 10 drug-related crimes., use of firearms and money laundering of which he was accused. His sentence is scheduled for June 25.

The legal team of Guzmán Loera has not stopped managing for his client. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador revealed a letter from the drug trafficker's mother asking him to manage humanitarian visas for herself and her family.

"In fact, I went to Badiraguato and a lawyer gave me a letter from the mother of Guzmán Loera, like all mothers, asking for support for her son. Legally, they've made me an approach and also in the humanitarian part, "said AMLO.

The president has agreed to arrange with the US authorities for his family to visit him.
