The macabre images circulating on the networks about Tuesday’s massacre in a Guayaquil prison leave frightening human testimonies like that of Marlene palma, a mother who was waiting this Friday next to a municipal mortuary the restitution of the head of his son.
“I have already entered. What happens is that they can’t find the head to give me the body, because he was beheaded and burnt. So I wait for the body. I’ve been there before and they’ve already helped me, ”this woman from southern Guayaquil told Efe, with a surprisingly serene tone that contrasts with the tragic situation her son experienced in prison.
Palma assures us that the doctors and psychologists “treated her well” and that of the brawl that occurred on Tuesday at the Litoral prison, where 118 inmates died, sand found out through one of the many scary videos that have been circulating the internet of beheaded heads.
“Only in this Ecuador (they happen) these things, because in other countries I do not see that they exist”, claims the mother as she wanders past the morgue, a place of pilgrimage for hundreds of people who are still searching for their loved ones from the massacre.
Although this latest peak of the crisis has crossed all limits and led the government to declare a state of emergency, the woman predicts that “that will never change” and that the authorities “They must act more. Enter the armed army, do your research, because this is not going to stop “.
Tuesday’s was the worst massacre on record in an Ecuadorian prison, preceded by another settling of scores in February with some 80 inmates dead, and a third in July that left more than 20 dead.
Complaints against the state for not being able to maintain order in prisons, controlled by gangs linked to drug trafficking, arise because many victims were apparently unrelated to the brawl and were allegedly flesh to cannon for gangs.
Her son, said the 70-year-old woman, “was killed in the second (wave) Tuesday morning (sic, actually ‘Wednesday morning’).” He was, in fateful room 5, where most of the bodies were found.
That same night, during the first clashes, says Marlene, her son called his wife to tell her: “I’m fine mom, I’m hiding. Tell my mom I’m fine, be calm. Injured because they have launched grenades, but light “.
But, he adds, “from there they told me the next day that he was dead and that they had beheaded him. They shot him, pa pa pa, when he was dead they shot him down “.
The next morning the videos started to circulate, taken by the prisoners themselves, and one of them reached a daughter of Marlene: “So my daughter called me and told me that my son was sick.”
The 30-year-old son, whose name he did not disclose, was serving a three-year sentence for robbery. “It was his first crime,” he said, and he had already served two years.
The rest is part of the drama of all the relatives who today roam the city in search of the bodies of their loved ones, but who in Marlene’s case takes a macabre outcome due to the circumstances of the case.
And if on Thursday they did it in the park of Samanes, this Friday, from 6 a.m., relatives began to crowd next to the gate of the morgue in a long queue to be able to access and obtain information from the authorities and, those already with confirmation, recover the corpses for burying.
“I have to wait until they find their heads,” laments the woman, who bursts into tears when questioned by Efe and manages to say that “this is the worst news” she could have received in her life.
“No one deserves such a death. Even if they are prisoners, no matter what! No one deserves such a savage death!” seems to have the solution to solve it.
“What is the president doing in all of this?”, Where is it that does not face? So many parents who leave their orphaned children! Where is?”.
And he wonders if the Government will henceforth support the families of the murdered like his, who left three children of 5, 7 and 9 years old… “Will the State respond to all the relatives?” .
It also recalls the humble origins of most of the detainees, who do not even have “for the box (coffin)” and are forced to collect among the large family to buy it and “give it a Christian burial”.
“I do not even have the happiness to take my son to mourn and watch over him. Why? Because we live in fear, we do not know if the mafias have after one”, she concludes. ‘a sorry look.
