● 1860. Gustav Mahler was born in Kaliště. The Austrian composer performed the swan song of German romanticism. Author of nine symphonies, he left the tenth unfinished. Conan Doyle went on to write other Holmes stories, which overshadowed the rest of his work. The death of a son during the First World War brought him closer to spiritualism in his later years.

● 1940. Richard Starkey was born in Liverpool. He adopted the name Ringo Starr and became a popular drummer as a member of Rory Storrm and the Hurricanes. However, he left this group in 1962 to join The Beatles. He was the voice of classics like “Yellow Submarine” and “With A Little Help From My Friends” and composed “Don’t Pass Me By” and “Octopus’s Garden”. He combined music with acting and is still active.

● 1963. Arturo Illia wins the presidential elections. The candidate of the Radical Civic Union of the People won over Oscar Alende of UCRI. Third, the former dictator Pedro Eugenio Aramburu, presented by the Union of the Argentine People. The Illia-Perette formula wins with just 25%. ● 1990. The first concert of the Three Tenors takes place. José Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti sing in Rome, on the eve of the World Cup final between Argentina and West Germany. ● 1997. María Herminia Avellaneda dies at the age of 63. ● 2005. Three bombs explode in the London Underground, a day after the city was chosen to host the 2012 Olympics, and as the G8 meets in Scotland. An hour later, a fourth bomb explodes in a bus. 52 people die, plus the four suicide bombers and there are around 700 injured. The Al-Qaeda network claimed responsibility for the attack, in retaliation for the British incursion into Iraq. Two weeks later there is another similar terrorist attempt in the city, but the bombs do not explode and four attackers manage to set themselves on fire: there is barely one injured.
