The High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union (EU), Josep borrell, acknowledged this Wednesday that mistakes were made in the bloc’s delegation to Cuba, after meeting with the ambassador of the community in the Caribbean country, Alberto Navarro, after the criticisms of several MEPs against him.
“Yes, I had the opportunity to meet (with Navarro). Obviously there have been some errors, but they need to be evaluated in due time and when the evaluation is complete I will respond to MPs “Borrell said at a press conference on EU humanitarian aid in the context of the coronavirus pandemic.
A group of about 40 Tory MPs sent letter to Borrell asking him to fire Navarro, for signing a letter with 790 people in which he asked the President of the United States, Joe Biden, to lift the embargo on Cuba, after making sure that there is no dictatorship in the Caribbean country.
After receiving complaints from deputies, Borrell called Navarro for consultations two weeks ago and, although only this Wednesday, he confirmed that he had met him, He avoided commenting on the content of the meeting and assured that he is still evaluating the ambassador’s performance..
In their letter, MEPs, half of whom are Spanish, told Borrell that the call for consultations was not enough and they asked for his dismissal.
“What can leave no doubt is the classification” of Cuba as “a one-party regime, which constitutionally establishes socialism as the only model of state and which ignores political pluralism”, underlined the deputies in their letter.
They also added that the fact that the European Union’s ambassador to Cuba asserted that the country is not a dictatorship “Causes deep and lasting damage to the image of the EU”.
Navarro’s recent actions have sparked controversy in recent weeks in the European Parliament, because the complaints of the Conservative MPs were answered by the left groups, with another letter to Borrell defend the ambassador, on his request to end the embargo on the island.
“The EU has maintained this same position during the annual votes at the United Nations General Assembly, where each year the majority calls for an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade which constitutes a violation of the human rights of the Cuban people. ; usually with the only votes against the United States and Israel “left MEPs said.
