Firefighters from the German city of Bensheim, about 60 kilometers south of Frankfurt, took part in an unusual call Sunday afternoon: A girl discovered that there was a rat stuck in a hole in the cover of a sewer and asked for help to release it.

Michael Sehr, a member of local animal rescue services, was the first to go to the scene with the little girl who had warned her of the emergency but could not release the rodent and had decided to call the fire department. "The rat had a lot of winter fat and could not move forward or backward"Sehr told local media.

Eight firefighters came to the rescue. Amongst others, they lifted the heavy cover and supported him in some holds, so that Sehr pushed the rat and managed to free him so that he returned to the inside of the house. 39; sewer.

Then, Sehr received a drawing of the rat surrounded by hearts, made by the girl who had asked for help.

Sehr also posted photos and videos of the operation on his Facebook page and hundreds of users have celebrated the attention paid to an animal usually the target of extermination.

However, others wondered about the fact that so much effort had gone into saving a rat. "Even the most hated animals deserve respect"replied Sehr.
