"The hell high tech": this is the prison where Chapo Guzmán will serve his sentence

"High tech hell", "Rocky Alcatraz" and "SuperMax" are some of the nicknames of the prison where will be sent the drug dealer Joaquín "Chapo" Guzmán, considered one of the safest and most cruel of the United States.

El Chapo was found guilty of drug trafficking, possession of weapons and money laundering by a New York jury. He was sentenced to a non-negotiable life sentence, which will meet in the maximum security prison ADX in Florence, State of Colorado.

Built in 1994 in the heart of a mountainous desert (the Rockies), it is almost impossible to escape from this facility surrounded by watchtowers and heavily armed men. Even for Guzmán, who has already escaped from Mexico's maximum security prisons twice. But Florence did not leave before its time.

The most dangerous prisoners they are confined 22 hours and a half a day in a concrete cell and 2.1 steel over 3.6 meters, from which they can only come out with chains at the feet and hands.

Robert Hood, a former guard in Florence, said that this prison was nothing more than a "version of hell but cleaner and much worse than death".

El Chapo will join other convicted drug traffickers, but also terrorists such as Ramzi Youssef (mastermind of the first attacks on the World Trade Center in 1993), Zacarias Moussaoui (the Frenchman condemned for the attacks of September 11th). 2011). and Djokhar Tsarnaev (sentenced to death for the Boston bombings in 2013).

A report from the Corrections Information Center in Washington DC indicates that the vast majority of detainees (92% of the 427 prisoners) were transferred from other federal prisons to "disciplinary problems". Many also suffer from mental disorders.

The daily lives of maximum security prisoners are not optimistic: they are locked in solitary confinement in a cell with a bed, desk and concrete bench, shower, toilet and a steel washbasin. The light of day goes through a hole of ten centimeters which is the closest thing to a window that they will have, but that prevents them from looking outward.

The cells have a sealed steel door, so that the detainees can not talk to each other. The only human contact comes with the few words they exchange with the guards when they bring their food.

Visits are allowed but must be approved by the prison. According to Chapo's lawyers, his young wife – Emma Coronel – will not be allowed to see it.

The only moment to capture some of the sunlight is in the minutes of "recreation". Three or five guards take the inmate chained in a sort of cage no larger than the cell, where they can finally see the sky and speak, if that corresponds to the other prisoners of the neighboring cages. These "exits", which also serve to requisition the dungeon they are limited to ten hours a week.

The distraction is limited to a little sport, alternating hobbies, drawings, books and watching TV inside the cell.
