The history of emoji of menstruation that will be on WhatsApp

A red drop will be the emoji that will represent menstruation in the WhatsApp messaging service. The novelty is included in the 230 new icons that will be activated in the coming months.

The graphic was promoted as part of an NGO Plan International campaign in a bid to "break the taboo that reigns around the rule in several countries".

The history of emoji menstruation began in 2017, when the women of the NGO launched a campaign stating that, if there was an icon in this sense, "it could help normalize periods in daily conversations ". In addition to representing "a big step forward to break a global culture of shame around this period".

The NGO launched a call via Facebook to vote on five possible projects. The winning design was a garment stained with a drop of blood, but this one having been rejected by Unicode, the new icon appeared.

It will be available on the mobile platform from next March.
