This natural color image of smoke and fires in several Brazilian states, including Amazonas, Mato Grosso and Rondônia, was captured by the NASA / NOAA Suomi NPP satellite on August 19th.

The picture shows much of the south of the Amazon, with smoke reaching the southern Andean Mountains, lower left.

It is not uncommon to see fires in Brazil at this time of year due to high temperatures and low humidity. Time will tell if a record is reached this year or is only within normal limits, reports NASA.

The wave of fires began two weeks ago in Bolivia, but epidemics are spreading inside Brazil and even Peru. The area burned is counted by hundreds of thousands of hectares.
