The Italian public prosecutor’s office reported on Tuesday that authorities investigating the causes Stresa cable car accident that left at least 14 dead It does not exclude the hypothesis according to which it could have been due to a “human error”, consequence of the maintenance and overhaul work to which the installations were subjected a few days ago.
“No hypothesis can be excluded, not even that of human error»Commented the principal person in charge of the investigations, the prosecutor of Verbania, Olimpia Bossi, reported the agency Adnkronos.
“The hypothesis of human error is part of the investigations but it is not found in the videos, which are not even of good quality,” said Bossi, who on Monday already confirmed that the cable car’s safety brake was not working, so the cabin reached speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, propelling itself up to 54 meters.
Bossi also communicated on Tuesday that On Saturday afternoon, one day before the accident, the cable car installations were shut down, so it had to be restarted, but, he specifies, “we don’t know if this is linked to the accident” .
A day after Bossi announced that the owner of the cable car was in the process of being determined, the authorities of the Piedmont region and those of the municipality of Stresa blamed each other in the last hours.
Although the Piedmont Department of Transport wanted to settle the matter by declaring that “it is the property of the municipality”, the mayor of Stresa, Marcella Severino, explained that the transfers had not been made, after the signing years ago of an agreement in which the Piedmontese government would finance the restructuring of the cable car.
Regarding this question, Bossi explained that this agreement “still needs to be clarified”, because “it is not known” whether the transfer of ownership from Piedmont to Stresa “has occurred in its entirety or if there is a distribution in terms of financing of maintenance of installations. “
“History has complex profiles which become a little more delicate every day,” he said.
Among those killed in the crash is a nine-year-old boy, and the Israeli government has confirmed the deaths of five of its citizens: a couple of medical students, their son and the woman’s grandparents, from Israel. The other child under five is admitted with a guarded prognosis, but doctors are convinced of his recovery.
The cable car traveled the route from Lake Maggiore to Mottarone mountain when, for reasons still under study, the cable supporting it broke 300 meters from the arrival station, in the highest part of the route, where it reaches 1,400 meters above sea level.
