The leg of a baby was amputated by mistake

The judicial authorities of Valencia, Spain, are on alert for the case of a baby who has been operated "by mistake". According to local media, doctors his leg was amputated at the knee after perforating a vein with a puncture. His family insists that they investigate what happened.

The case was left in the hands of the patient's lawyer, who has already sent a letter to Valencia's superior prosecutor, María Teresa Gisbert. Gérard's parents, the amputated baby, reported in a dramatic publication that at 23 weeks of pregnancy, the mother was beginning to lose amniotic fluid and had been admitted to the Castellón General Hospital. A week later, the head of the pediatrics department told him that if his son was born at that time, he would not survive.

But the situation worsened to the point that they had to undergo a caesarean section in a few days beyond the risk that this entailed. The baby was born with 880 grams and, against all odds, without complications. "It was very premature, but it was fine", commented his family.

Only in this case did the doctors admit that they had become confused. "The chief of pediatrics told us in textual terms "we were wrong"", they said indignantly.
