The mayor of the municipality of CH de Montevideo, Andrés Abt, and member of the National Party (PN-center-right), died this Friday from covid-19 with only 47 years.

The politician was one of the figures who had emerged with more force in the ranks of the party to which the president of the country, Luis Lacalle Pou, belongs. In fact, he was running for his second consecutive town hall after being re-elected in the last municipal elections in September 2020.

According to the local press, the mayor, hospitalized for days at the Intensive Treatment Center (CTI), suffered from asthma when he was in good health.

Abt’s death sparked dismay among allies and adversaries, who recognized his gift for being a good public servant, as well as his personality and steadfast willingness to work.

Specifically, President Lacalle Pou recalled it on his Twitter account and said that “a great colleague, a great friend” is gone and that it is sad news for those who knew and love him. .

“I feel great sorrow for the death of our dear colleague Andrés Abt. His always joyful spirit, his kindness, his willingness to work for the good of others remain in our hearts ”, The country’s vice president, Beatriz Argimón, posted on her Twitter.

Likewise, the secretary of the country’s presidency, Álvaro Delgado, said that Abt “fought him to the end” and that today is “a very sad day for the National Party”.

He was also remembered by his rival supporters, as is the case of the mayor of Montevideo and a member of the Frente Amplio (FA-left), Carolina Cosse, who published that she “deeply” regretted the death of ‘Abt and addressed him a greeting on behalf of the entire government team in the Uruguayan capital.

“Deeply moved by the death of Mayor Andrés Abt. His youth made us believe that he could beat this damn virus ”, FA Senator Liliam Kechichian said.

Since the health emergency was declared on March 13, 2020, Uruguay has recorded 69,074 cases from 1,114,405 tests performed. There are currently 9,758 patients with the disease, 110 of whom are in intensive care.
