According to authorities, the shooter, whose identity is still unknown, allegedly wrote a manifesto on the Internet giving the reasons for the attack.

Witness Len Peneha claims to have seen a man dressed in black enter the Masjid Al Norr mosque, then heard dozens of shots, followed by people who were terrorized there.

Peneha, who lives next to the mosque, said that the badailant had left the temple, dropped what appeared to be a semi-automatic weapon in front of his garage and had escaped. Peneha entered the mosque to try to help.

"I saw dead everywhere. There were three in the lobby, at the entrance gate and inside the mosque"He commented." It is something unbelievable. I do not understand how anyone could do this to these people, to anyone; it's ridiculous ".

He said he helped about five people to recover at home. He noted that one of them had suffered minor injuries.

"I live next to the mosque for about five years and the people are great, they are very friendly," he said. "I just do not understand."

He indicated that the aggressor was Caucasian and was using a helmet with a type of device at the end, giving it a military appearance.

Police have arrested a suspect whose identity is unknown.

The New Zealand Herald reported a second shooting in the mosque Linwood Masjid.

Mark Nichols told the newspaper that he had heard of five shots and that one of the parishioners had reacted to the attack with a rifle or shotgun. Nichols said he saw two people who had been taken on a stretcher in front of his auto shop and that both appeared alive.

New Zealand has only known a handful of mbadive shootings throughout its history.
