Police have arrested a suspect whose identity is unknown.
The New Zealand Herald reported a second shooting in the mosque Linwood Masjid.
Mark Nichols told the newspaper that he had heard of five shots and that one of the parishioners had reacted to the attack with a rifle or shotgun. Nichols said he saw two people who had been taken on a stretcher in front of his auto shop and that both appeared alive.
