The Apostolic Nuncio of Argentina, Congolese Monsignor Leon Kalenga Badikebele, died today in Rome at the age of 62, after a long illness, Vatican sources said.

Born in Kamina, Democratic Republic of Congo, on July 17, 1956, Kalenga became a nuncio (Vatican ambbadador) since June 2018, after being appointed by Pope Francis.

Kalenga died Wednesday at Rome's Pio XI clinic, where he had been operated on unsuccessfully in mid-May to address a serious health problem he was going through.

Kalenga, the thirteenth nun in the country, was appointed by Jorge Bergoglio last March.
