The Pentagon does not exclude sending troops to Colombia

US Acting Secretary of Defense Pat Shanahan has not ruled out the possibility of sending US military forces to Colombia or the region because of the current political revolt in Venezuela. Shanahan said yesterday that he had not spoken with National Security Advisor John Bolton about the possibility of sending soldiers to Colombia. But he said that he had no comments to ask him if he had had other conversations about this plan or he could rule it out. Bolton had written "5,000 soldiers in Colombia" in an annotator Monday at a press conference to announce new sanctions against Venezuela.

It is likely that Bolton's note, clearly visible throughout his speech, was a provocation or simply an annotated idea that was not discussed with anyone. Nevertheless, the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement in which it stated: "With regard to the mention of Colombia in the notebook that John Bolton had in his hands, the scope and the reason for the annotation are Constant with the United States on all matters of common interest and cooperating with this friendly country, on bilateral, hemispheric and global issues. "The United States has a limited military presence in South America, with soldiers in Peru and Colombia.
