Maria Rico, 76, from Leicestershire, England, took off her oxygen mask to speak to her two daughters for the last time, as she knew it would hasten her death.
Anabel Sharma saw her mother die next to her in hospital after they both caught COVID-19, and now she is begging people to take precautions with the coronavirus.
Sharma described the moment as “heartbreaking” but said she was happy her mother didn’t die alone.
Now he has posted the last photo of his mother before she died to raise awareness about the virus.
“Comfort”
Sharma said her mother died around half an hour after removing her mask.
“My mother asked for the mask to be taken off and they said, ‘Once we take it off, it’s all over. You won’t have much time. ‘
“She said, ‘Yeah, I know, but I’ve had enough,’ said Sharma, 49.
“We had about five minutes with her while she could talk, and then she passed out.”
“She told us that she was not afraid to die, that she was ready. She told me that I had to fight a lot because I had my children at home.”
His sister Susana was also allowed to be present while wearing personal protective equipment.
“We held his hand until his last breath,” he added.
“It comforts me to know that we were able to be with her and I know that she has also brought comfort to my mother.”
Rico lived in the same house as Sharma, her husband, and their three children, Noah, 10, Isaac, 12, and Jacob, 22.
Sharma said she believed one of her children contracted the coronavirus at school and then “took” the family at “terrifying” speed.
“I would ask people to take all precautions and think of others,” he says.
Sharma and her mother were admitted to Leicester Royal Infirmary on the same day in October and Rico died on November 1.
His funeral was broadcast live to Sharma, who was still in the hospital.
“She was very aware of what was going to happen and she knew she was not going to recover and she had already had enough treatment,” said Sharma, who continues to receive home oxygen treatment because that his lungs were damaged by the virus.
He described his mother as an “amazing grandmother” and “very, very stubborn”.
