In total, about 200 people, nuns, children and guests were present at the ceremony who seemed a little lost in the face of the solemn immensity of the place, the agency said. AFP.

Over the 14 stations illustrating the Passion of Christ, staged around the obelisk in the center of the square, the children told anecdotes that show their daily life.

The pandemic that has affected the world for more than a year was of course very present.

In the ninth station, the one commemorating the fall of Jesus, a girl mentioned the changes the Covid has brought to her life.

“Since last year, we have not visited our grandparents (…) I miss them! (…) Sometimes I feel lonely. School is closed,” she said.

“Dear Jesus, you know that we children also have crosses, which are neither lighter nor heavier than those of adults, but which are real crosses, which we feel heavy even at night. And only you know that and take them seriously. Only you ”, read the children at the beginning of the Stations of the Cross.

“The crosses are the fear of the dark, of loneliness and abandonment, also because of the pandemic, of experiencing one’s own limits, of ridiculing others, of feeling poorer than one’s own. peers, from the pain of fighting in mom and dad’s family, ”they said.

But there are children in the world who also suffer because “they have no food, they have no education, they are exploited and forced into war. You, Jesus, are always close to us and never abandon us ”, the children concluded.

“Help us every day to carry our crosses as you carried yours”, prayed the children with the Sovereign Pontiff.
