The season of whale watching begins in Puerto Madryn and in the Valdes Peninsula

Each year, more than 1,000 specimens arrive in protected areas of Chubut to breed.

A few days ago, the first free whales started arriving from La Cantera beach in the breeding and breeding areas of Puerto Madryn and the Valdés peninsula. According to the Institute of Whale Conservation (ICB), between the end of the month and May, adults, pregnant women and juveniles begin to arrive in isolation.

The first right whales were seen in the protected natural area of ​​El Doradillo, about 15 km from the town of Puerto Madryn. From the beaches and cliffs, you can observe the natural behavior of these marine mammals without resorting to boats.

According to the experts, more than 1000 right whales arrive each year in the protected natural area of ​​the Valdés peninsula. Between August and September, the largest number of specimens is concentrated after birth.

"It is essential that any activity involving interactions with whales and other marine mammal species be conducted in a sustainable manner and in accordance with the principle of ecological precaution," said Diego Taboada, president of the ICB.

As he explained, "the current regulations in Chubut is the result of a participatory work in which the experience of captains and whale guides has been fundamental to shaping what the l '39. the so-called "Patagonian whale watching technique".

From June to December

The most favorable period for whale watching is between mid-June and early December. Specimens are not only registered in the Chubut area, but also on the coasts of Uruguay and southern Brazil.

Right whales are migratory and congregate in different regions of South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, between the autumn and the austral spring, between 20 ° and 64 ° of latitude. At the end of the breeding season, the BIE explained, the whales are heading to the feeding areas. In the case of specimens that were in the Valdes Peninsula, they move to the islands of South Georgia and other regions of the Argentine Sea.
