A hospital in Tokyo gave a medical discharge to a baby born last August with 268 grams of weight, who has since remained in an incubator. He is the smallest boy in the world to have survived a premature birth.

The baby was born through an emergency procedure at Keio University Hospital. He was treated in intensive care for newborns up to reach 2338 grams, confirmed today the doctor responsible, Takeshi Arimitsu.

According to Keio University, it's the smallest child to have survived an untimely birth, a record that until now bore a baby born in Germany in 2009 with 274 grams of weight.

Also in Germany is born in 2015 the youngest girl of which we have so far proof, with only 252 grams.

In Japan, the country with the lowest infant mortality according to UNICEF data, the survival rate of newborns weighing less than one kilogram is 90%although this proportion is reduced to less than 50% for babies under 300 grams.

Arimitsu pointed out that although this is a "high risk" case, the success shows "that it is possible that the baby leaves the hospital even if it was born very small".

For her part, the mother of the child, who did not want to make his name public, expressed his "happiness to see him so big" and after "not knowing if I could survive".
