Russian authorities have approved the use of the Sputnik Light coronavirus vaccine, which consists of a single dose, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) said.

“Russian Ministry of Health, Gamaleya Research Center for Epidemiology and Biotechnology and RDIF Announce Registration of One-Component Sputnik Light Coronavirus Vaccine,” Russian news agency Sputnik said in a statement.

The note pointed out that “the effectiveness of the single dose Sputnik Light vaccine is 79.4 percent from the 28th day after its application.”

This is a single-dose version of the human adenovirus Sputnik V vaccine, a version that requires two administrations with an interval of 21 days for complete immunization and whose efficacy is 91.6%.

The director of the Gamaleya Center, Alexandr Guintsburg, stressed that “Sputnik Light can prevent the spread of the coronavirus through faster immunization of large population groups,” in the RDIF statement.

He also argued that the vaccine helps “maintain high levels of immunity in people who have overcome the coronavirus.”

“Sputnik Light is a good instrument for the first and second application, as well as for increasing the efficiency (of vaccination) when combining vaccines,” he said.
