Venice began to suffer in the last days a marked decrease in water level which prevents the circulation of their boats and complicates their tourist activities, a situation which adds to the crisis generated by the coronavirus pandemic. This emblematic city of Italy, which in full containment due to the coronavirus pandemic surprised by the clarity of the water in its canals, now offers some unusual images of their dry canals.

This phenomenon, known in Italy as low water (low water, in italian) and whose reverse is called high tide (high tide), is associated with fluctuating tides that affect the city of canals, located on a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea.

According to data from the Venice Tidal Report and Forecast Center, the low water it started to stand out on February 24 and has already reached critical levels. Normal tidal values ​​range from 50 to 79 centimeters from the bottom. At this time, there are losses of up to 50 centimeters, and some canals are completely dry.

This is not the first time that Venice has suffered a situation of these characteristics. Although in January 2020, the city’s tide recorded a similar low to the current one, the historic low occurred in February 2018, when the water reached 83 centimeters below sea level.

Meanwhile, the high tide Venice reached its peak in November 2019, when the city recorded its highest tide in 50 years and water reached 166 centimeters in some canals.

At that time, the floods caused the death of a 78-year-old man, electrocuted, damage worth more than a billion euros and left the Basilica of San Marcos, located in the square of the same name, completely under the ‘water.
