John Bolton made a statement Tuesday at the White House during the day of tension in Venezuela. Donald Trump's security advisor revealed that Vladimir Padrino López (Minister of Defense), Maikel Moreno (President of the Supreme Court of Justice) and Iván Hernández Dala (Director of the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence)) negotiated with Juan Guaidó the departure of Nicolás Maduro from power.
"As all Venezuela knows, the opposition is committed to supporting the overthrow of Maduro," acknowledged Bolton.
"Time is running out, it's your last chance, accept the amnesty of interim President Guaidó, protect the Constitution and eliminate Maduro from power, and we will remove them from our sanctioned list."he warned the regime's officials.
"If they stay with Maduro, they will sink with the ship", he added.
A few minutes before the press conference, Bolton said that "the only way to ease the sanctions" is to "accept the generous offer of Guaidó and support the democratically elected leaders of the National Assembly".
During his statement, he stressed the role of the interim president in the face of the crisis in the Caribbean country and warned that if Monday's effort failed the people will sink into a dictatorship "for which there are few alternatives": "If this effort fails, they will sink into a dictatorship for which there are few alternatives, it is a very delicate moment".
On the break in the Venezuelan Armed Forces, Bolton said: "There is no support of the army in Maduro, there is fear". In this line, he stressed that the acting president "has a lot of popular support".
"People showed that they were willing to protect Guaidó," he said following a question about a possible arrest by Chavez's forces.
Bolton again repudiated the intervention of Cuba and Russia in the Venezuelan crisis: "We need the country to be ruled by the people of Venezuela and not by foreign forces."
While reiterating that "all options are on the table", the US Security Advisor clarified that "Trump wants to see a peaceful transition in Venezuela."
On Monday, around 6 am, Venezuelan time, Guaidó announced the launch of "the final phase of Operation Libertad", in collaboration with Leopoldo López, who was released from house arrest by military rebels.
After the call to the people to mobilize across the country, thousands of Venezuelans gathered in different cities to demand, once again, the fall of the dictatorship. Regime forces repressed with tear gas, armor and detonations.
