The regional impact of the Peruvian presidential elections does not stop at the political spheres of the region. On June 22, the electoral authorities of this country received a specific request, signed by 31 Ibero-American parliamentarians, personalities and journalists: repeat the second round of elections between Pedro Castillo and Keiko Fujimori.

The letter addressed to the said authority is signed by representative leaders of the continental right, such as MEP Hermann Tertsch, as well as by various legislators from Bolivia, Colombia and Guatemala.

For Colombia, they were the senators of the Democratic Center María Fernanda Cabal, Paola Holguín, Paloma Valencia, as well as five other colleagues from headquarters, as well as the former Colombian Minister of the Interior and Justice, Fernando Londoño, who appended their signatures in an attempt to get the electoral authorities to reconsider the results of June 6.

In one of its sections, the letter argues that these elections have acquired a dimension of political problem for the region, given that “a series of circumstances, which include suspicion of fraud by 70 percent of voters, serious statement by former military leaders and the accusations, valid or not, of the biased behavior of the authorities, have transformed a question of a technical-electoral nature into a delicate political problem ”, which is why the signatories consider it to be a weighty argument to raise this scenario.

They also point out that the winner of the fair will not reach a consensus in the polarized political environment of Peru: “it is practically impossible for the National Electoral Jury (JNE) proclaim one or the other of the winning candidates, without producing negative reactions that could affect the peace and stability of the Peruvian nation ”.

They point out that the interference of some presidents and former presidents of the region in favor of Pedro Castillo is interference in the electoral process that is not completed, which is why, according to them, it is another factor that corrupts the democratic righteousness of the neighboring country.

“The atmosphere of mistrust was compounded by the interference of the sitting presidents, among whom, Alberto Fernández, Luis Arce and Daniel Ortega; as well as former presidents Lula da Silva, Evo Morales and Rafael Correa; those who have spoken publicly in favor of one of the candidates, without having been proclaimed, ”they add in the request submitted to the electoral authorities.

In conclusion, Cabal and his peers propose that “in a reasonable and politically viable manner, the request to repeat the electoral race in its second round be accepted” for the benefit of both Peru and the peace of the region.

To the electoral authorities and to the candidates Pedro Castillo and Keiko Fujimori, to reach an agreement allowing a peaceful settlement of this matter, reasonable and, above all, politically viable, as is the repetition of the second round under conditions which generate the confidence of the voters ”, concludes the document.

It should be noted that the President of the United States, Joe biden, ruled in favor of the election results which gave the candidate the winner Pedro Castillo, although Keiko Fujimori He did not want to recognize his defeat or endorse the results of his country’s electoral authorities.
