The Catholic Church of Venezuela asked this Thursday to refrain from seeking political revenues in the humanitarian aid that the Red Cross distributes in the country and advocated a "complete democracy".
"That all that surrounds humanitarian aid really aims to achieve its goal. This is not a gift from anyone, but it is the need of our people"says the cardinal Baltazar Porras to journalists during the celebration of Holy Thursday in the Cathedral of Caracas.
Cheers Socialist President Nicolás Maduro's Severe Criticism Denounces Venezuela's "Serious Situation" for the "lack" of food and medicine, blackouts and security issueswho, he said, are even deeper in the interior of the country.
"Only happiness is built in a genuine democracy," said the prelate, who called an agreement "without political distinction" in the middle of the power struggle between Maduro and the opposition Juan Guaidó, recognized as acting agent for more than 50 countries.
Porras had already mentioned Wednesday the help of the Red Cross, whose first shipment of drugs, hospital supplies and power plants arrived Tuesday after Maduro approved it.
"The important thing is not who gives it, but who gets it", said the hierarch of the Venezuelan Church, accusing Maduro of leading a "de facto government" and generating "Ungovernability".
Socialist leader accuses church leaders of acting as a political partybut that makes a difference with Pope Francisco who in the past has supported the dialogue between the government and the opposition to resolve the political crisis.
Although the Venezuelan Red Cross also asked not to "politicize" the help, Maduro says it was concluded after an agreement between his government and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
For its part, Guaidó said his income was the result of pressure on Chavez's "dictatorship" and "failure to recognize". A second shipment will arrive on May 8th.
Porras also said that the Church remains ready to support an approach between the government and the opposition, Although he said that Maduro had used these efforts in the past to "buy time".
"The Pope has always stressed and we are always ready to build bridges, since it is the primordial function that we have as Church, without any distinction ", he said.
