The Venezuelan opposition demanded this Sunday from the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro that the vaccines against the coronavirus not be used politically, a day after the arrival of the first batch of 100,000 doses of Russian Sputnik V in the country as part of the agreement signed between the Chavist regime and Russia.

“We demand that the people of Venezuela be vaccinated, starting with those most vulnerable to the coronavirus, with international criteria and that they not be used politically”, said the former opposition parliamentarian Dinorah Figuera in a message on his Twitter social network account.

Saturday 100,000 vaccines have arrived in Venezuela, out of a total of 10 million agreed with Russia, and as the Venezuelan authorities have explained, they will be applied primarily to medical personnel and vulnerable people.

Dictator Maduro said last Tuesday that the vaccines would also be applied to teachers and later to members of Somos Venezuela, a government movement that distributes aid and proselytizes politically in the country.

Sputnik V is the first covid-19 vaccine the South American country receives and the batch has been received by the Executive Vice President, Delcy Rodriguez; the Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jorge Arreaza; the Minister of Health, Carlos alvarado; and the Russian Ambassador in Caracas, Sergey Mélik-Bagdasárov.

During the reception of vaccines, the vice-president explained that “the most aggravated cases of patients with morbidities” will also be vaccinated.

Maduro celebrated the arrival of Russian doses yesterday and said that “soon” they will start mass vaccination of the population. The Russian ambassador, for his part, maintained that the agreement between Caracas and Moscow “Is a symbol” of the friendship between the two nations and of their “prosperous and secure future”.

Venezuela has been the scene since the start of clinical trials of the Russian vaccine, which is 91.6% effective, according to the results of the third phase.

The Venezuelan dictator denounced the blocking of his government’s resources frozen abroad for the purchase of a batch of vaccines. Caracas turned to the United Nations (UN) to release the funds blocked by the sanctions and thus begin mass vaccination of its population.

In this sense, the Venezuelan opposition assured Tuesday that it was ready to “Look for resources” to be able to acquire vaccines against covid-19 from the Covax mechanism, an international platform coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Venezuela reached 1,273 deaths from covid-19 on Saturday, after six new deaths and 484 infections were recorded in the past 24 hours. In this way, the total number of confirmed cases was 132,743, according to data provided by Chavismo. Data that from the beginning have been questioned by the opposition and various Venezuelan organizations, which speak of a much greater impact of the pandemic in the country.

Venezuela has been applying for months a method of relaxing the quarantine, with seven days of confinement followed by 7 others of partial opening, in order to give dynamism to its struggling economy.

According to this method called “7 + 7”, bars, restaurants, cinemas, theaters, shops, businesses, parks or gymnasiums open their doors every seven days.

Maduro has decided to extend this week’s easing until February 17 regarding carnivals.
