The first images of the world-shaking moment were released this Thursday, after part of the residential building at 8777 Collins Avenue in Surfside, Miami collapsed.
Police have not yet been able to confirm a specific number of missing and have limited themselves to confirming one dead and dozens injured that were taken care of in the early hours.
After the collapse, the causes of which are unknown, a mountain of debris formed next to the Champlain Tours building, where some 80 rescuers worked all night in search of possible victims and survivors to evacuate the people. which are still inside.
Residents of neighboring apartment buildings said they were afraid when they heard what sounded like an explosion. “It was as if stones were falling, then sparks started falling from the wall and the power went out. I woke up nervous with all of this tragedy. The truth was very ugly, ”he commented to News 23 Armando Roig, who lives next to the collapsed building.
Some buildings and houses around the site of the collapse are without power, while several trucks from the electricity company FPL are working to restore service.
In emergency communications services, Miami Beach firefighters said they were working on the building collapse “with multiple patients” and called for help from “all available units.”
Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said dogs were involved in the search but “tragically” no survivors have been found so far. “Apparently when the building collapsed it fell on itself, so they don’t find any gaps or see a lot of empty spaces from the outside.”
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava lamented “the horrible tragedy” and sent condolences to those affected.
According to local media, the building was constructed in 1981 and had 130 units.
