The Mexican National Institute of Migration (INM) suspended two of its agents for what it called “mischief” during an operation in which migrants were attacked on Saturday at the country’s southern border.
The suspensions, which were officially notified on Sunday, come after a video was posted on social media showing INM agents hitting and kicking a migrant’s head to avoid passing through Tapachula, in the southern state of Chiapas.
The man was part of a caravan of migrants, mostly Central Americans, trying to cross Mexico into the United States.
According to the videos released, the events occurred when one of the migrants who was part of the group advancing on the road from Tapachula to Arriaga confronted an INM officer.
Later, two other agents try to help their partner and end up hitting the migrant, throwing him to the ground and kicking him in the face.
And meanwhile, National Guard agents are seen surrounding the scene with their shields to prevent the intervention of other migrants.
After the suspension of the agents, the INM indicated that it would not tolerate “any behavior outside or different” from its protocols and policies for “the safeguard and respect of the human rights of people within the framework of mobility”.
For their part, human rights organizations such as the National Human Rights Commission of Mexico and Amnesty International Mexico condemned the events and called on the Mexican government to act “with a humanitarian approach” to the arrival of migrants. .
According to local media on Monday, there was another INM and GN operation to attempt to dismantle the migrant caravan, made up of several hundred people, who left Tapachula on Saturday.

Likewise, in the state of Chiapas, some 15,000 elements of the army, navy and national guard are deployed to stop migratory flows from Central America.
