Indian authorities have confirmed 50 dead in heavy flooding caused by a glacier collapse in northern India last weekend, after rescue teams recovered seven more bodies, most of them in a tunnel they were in. They found several workers at a hydroelectric plant that was inundated by the flooding.

This Sunday, rescue teams managed to extract twelve bodies and continued work in an attempt to access the Tapovan tunnel where it is believed there may be people still trapped alive, DPA reported.

These twelve bodies are the first to be rescued from the area where the tunnel is being searched. There are still 158 people missing, according to the PTI news agency.

The tragedy occurred last Sunday in the district of Chamoli, in the state of Uttarajand, in the Himalayas, which caused the overflow of the rivers Alaknanda and Dhauliganga.

Debris and mud brought by the avalanche blocked the main tunnel – 1.7 kilometers long – in the facility that the energy group NTPC is building in the Chamoli district.

It is estimated that 35 workers were trapped on February 7, while rescuers continue to pump mud to find everyone, according to the “Hindustan Times” newspaper.

“The debris clearing continued through the night,” Indo-Tibetan border police spokesman Vivek Kumar Pandey said, adding that some 120 meters of the tunnel were already cleared.

An official quoted by “The Hindu” said that rescue teams could not establish any contact with the prisoners, but hope to find “vital signs”.

On the other hand, the authorities distributed around 100 food kits in the areas affected by the incident, which are home to 2,500 people.

Four army columns, two medical teams and an engineer task force were deployed to the area. In addition, seven other Indian Navy dive teams are involved in rescue operations. After the event, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi transferred his support to the region.
